Backers of Issue 8 Optimistic about Future Reform

Voters clearly want a change in Cincinnati City Council Elections

Cincinnati voters yesterday opposed Issue 8 and proportional representation by a margin of 53.5% to 46.5%. After winning among absentee voters by a margin of 52% to 48%, Issue 8 lost among Election Day voters influenced by a well-financed onslaught of negative attacks focusing almost exclusively on false claims about Issue 8 such as prospective costs for implementing proportional representation next year.

"It's clear that most Cincinnati city voters are ready for change in their elections," commented State Representative Tyrone K. Yates. "I'm optimistic about our opportunities to provide better representation. Better Ballot for Cincinnati leaders call on the civic community to take a rigorous review of how proportional representation might work in our city and how it could be implemented."

Leading Cincinnati reformers endorsed Issue 8 and worked for its passage. Endorsers included former Mayor Bobbie Sterne, former governor John Gilligan, former Vice-Mayors Marian Spencer and Jim Tarbell and State Representatives Tyrone K. Yates and Tom Brinkman. Organizations endorsing Issue 8 included Common Cause Ohio, Ohio Citizen Action, Ohio PIRG, COAST, Business Courier of Cincinnati, Citybeat, Cincinnati NAACP, Baptist Ministers Conference and the Charter Committee of Greater Cincinnati.
